Players the Mets should get back

Players the Mets should get back

In recent years, the New York Mets have seen plenty of players, including aces and stars, come and go. As the 2024 season rolls around and the Mets even out their record, they certainly wouldn’t mind seeing some of these familiar faces take the field again for New York. The Mets could even trade for some of these players before the deadline.

Three players the Mets should consider reuniting

Chris Bassitt

Chris Bassitt was a big part of the Mets’ success in 2022, posting a solid 3.42 ERA. Aside from Max Scherzer, Bassitt had the best ERA of any Mets starter that year. Even though Bassitt is 35, he still did well to follow up what he did for the Mets, as this year Bassitt still produced a 3.43 ERA. Bassitt would likely be a useful starter that wouldn’t be hard to get from the Toronto Blue Jays. The Blue Jays are currently last in the American League East with a 40-49 record. The Tampa Bay Rays are above the Blue Jays in the American League East and have already traded a pitcher. This shows that it may only be a matter of time before Toronto surrenders.

Colin Holderman

Colin Holderman’s stint in New York was short and sweet before he became a player for the Pittsburgh Pirates. At Pitt, Holderman was mediocre until this season, where he posted a 1.71 ERA. The Pirates are likely in a position to sell right now, as they are five games away from hitting .500. Holderman would be a useful acquisition for the Mets, as pitchers are constantly hitting the injured list. The Mets would like to give Eric Orze a chance, but many players who have been signed to Triple-A have not performed well. Holderman wouldn’t be a bad choice for New York as a trade deadline acquisition.

Max Scherzer

Unfortunately, for the defending champion Texas Rangers, there isn’t much of a chance of winning another World Series this year. The Rangers find themselves six games out of .500 and behind a wild-card spot. Texas could be forced to sell soon, which means some pitchers could be traded to other teams like the Mets, who are themselves in contention for a playoff spot. Max Scherzer has barely started this season with the Rangers, but Scherzer has done a good job of limiting the damage in those starts. Scherzer has been on the injured list for most of his time playing for the Rangers, as he has only started 11 games total for Texas. The 39-year-old is prone to injuries. However, the Mets wouldn’t mind seeing him back in Flushing. A trade for Scherzer likely wouldn’t be as costly as some other aces on the market, which makes Scherzer’s case even more compelling.

Overall, the Mets have seen a lot of pitchers come and go, including pitchers they’d like to see back in uniform. Before the deadline, the Mets should consider reuniting some of those players.
