Mumbai airport hit by heavy rain, 50 flights diverted or cancelled | Check advisories | Latest India News

Heavy rains and low visibility severely affected flight operations at Mumbai airport on Monday. According to latest reports, at least 50 flights scheduled to Mumbai were cancelled or diverted to several destinations including Ahmedabad, Hyderabad and Indore.

Airport authorities also advised that priority was being given to arrivals and significant changes had been made to accommodate diverted flights, resulting in delayed departures.

In view of the situation, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) has issued an advisory to passengers, advising them to check their flight status with their respective airlines and leave for the airport a little earlier.

Airlines issue advisories

Several airlines have also issued specific advisories to passengers due to flight delays and diversions.

“Due to weather conditions and resultant traffic congestion, flights to and from Mumbai are affected. Keep an eye on your flight status,” IndiGo wrote in its advisory.

Meanwhile, SpiceJet wrote, “Traffic congestion and slow vehicular movement is expected on Mumbai Airport Road due to heavy rains. Passengers travelling to the airport are advised to monitor real-time traffic and plan their journey accordingly. Check-in counters will close 60 minutes prior to departure. Necessary information has been communicated to affected passengers on their registered contact details (SMS/Email). All passengers are advised to monitor their flight status.”

Vistara also issued an advisory to passengers stating, “Heavy traffic congestion and slow vehicular movement is expected en route to Mumbai airport today due to weather conditions. Customers are advised to allow extra time for their journey to the airport.”

Air India wrote: “Heavy rains in Mumbai are impacting flight operations and leading to cancellation of some of our flights. Air India is offering a full refund or one-time complimentary reschedule for confirmed bookings for travel on July 8, subject to certain conditions.”

The airline has also provided its contact centre numbers – 011 69329333, 011 69329999 – to its passengers for further assistance.

Mumbai has been witnessing heavy rains since Sunday, causing massive flooding in several parts of the city including Worli, Buntara Bhavan, Kurla East, King’s Circle area and Dadar. Flooding was reported on several railway tracks, leading to train cancellations, delays and massive rush at railway stations.

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Colaba recorded 83.8 mm rainfall and Santacruz 267.9 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours. Mumbai city received a total of 2,547 mm rainfall, which is 27 per cent of the annual average rainfall during the same period.

At 1 pm, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that heavy rains are very likely to occur at isolated places in Mumbai, Raigad and Ratnagiri during the next three to four hours.

Meanwhile, a high tide of 4.40 metres started at 1:57 pm in the sea. In view of this, all BMC schools, government schools and private schools and colleges in Mumbai will remain closed.
