David Lammy ‘seriously considering’ resuming funding for UNRWA despite alleged Hamas links

Speaking at the UN on Friday, Barbara Woodward, the UK’s permanent representative to the UN, revealed that Mr Lammy, the Foreign Secretary, was “carefully considering” resuming British funding to UNRWA.

“Palestinians in Gaza are facing a humanitarian catastrophe and a very real risk of starvation,” she told the UNRWA donor conference. “For months, they have suffered unbearable hardship, without the food and protection they need.”

She said the UK was committed to alleviating suffering and providing aid to civilians, adding: “We recognise that UNRWA is absolutely essential to these efforts.

“It plays a crucial role in delivering aid to those in need in Gaza and in providing essential services, including health care and education, to Palestinian refugees throughout the region.”

Ms Woodward said Britain had been “appalled” by allegations that UNRWA staff were involved in the October 7 massacre.

But she said the UK was committed to the aid agency.

“We are confident that UNRWA is taking strong action in response to Catherine Colonna’s independent review to ensure that it meets the highest standards of neutrality, transparency and accountability.”

Senior Conservative leaders, including likely party leadership contender Suella Braverman, have publicly called on Lord Cameron, the former foreign secretary, not to renew British support for the agency.

An anonymous conservative said the decision would be “morally bankrupt.”

On becoming Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer called for a ceasefire leading to lasting peace for Israelis and Palestinians and the release of all hostages, as well as increased humanitarian aid for Gaza.
