VVS Laxman surprised the Indian cricket team with a special gesture as interim fielding coach Subhadeep Ghosh shared a video message from outgoing fielding coach T Dilip, which started the most cherished fielding medal tradition in the Indian dressing room.

New Delhi: The time has come for Indian cricket to hand over the baton to the younger generation who, in a second-tier team, have just beaten Zimbabwe 4-1 in a T20I series, asserting their dominance and also asserting that they are a force to reckon with. This phase is very crucial for the Indian team which not only sees a change in the playing setup but also in the coaching staff.

With the Rahul Dravid era coming to an end, VVS Laxman has been named as the ‘interim’ head coach of a team of young players for the Zimbabwe tour. He has taken his own staff with him until the BCCI announces a completely new Indian coaching staff. While Gautam Gambhir has already been announced as the new head coach, taking over the role from the Sri Lanka tour that begins on July 26, his assistants (batting, bowling and fielding coaches) are still awaited.

The tradition continues…

As the ‘Boys in Blue’ beat Zimbabwe, the long-standing dressing room tradition of honouring players with field medals also continued. Although stalwart T Dilip (former fielding coach), who started this tradition, was not present with the second-choice team due to the end of his tenure, he made a special appearance through a video message in which he spoke about the importance of playing on the field during a match and why players should be rewarded for it.

For the medal presentation, he said that interim fielding coach Subhadeep Ghosh would reveal the winner (the best fielder of the series). Ghosh looked back at the entire series, reflecting on the aspects and differences that each of the five matches brought out, he finally named the winner as Rinku Singh, who was at his best as a catcher in the entire series. Subhadeep called Laxman to pass the honour on to Rinku as his teammates erupted in joy at his feat.

With his first fielding medal as a player for the Indian team in his hands, Rinku seemed to be on cloud nine as he had a big smile on his face and was made to stand on a stool and mouth a few words for the success. “I really enjoyed playing with everyone. It was my 4th or 5th series so I really enjoyed it. To be honest, I like fielding more than batting. I enjoy it a lot. It’s a lot of fun. It’s a lot of fun to run. So what else can I say… God’s plan,” said the left-hander.
