Elton John was “surprised” by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s decision to quit the royal family, a source has said.

In January 2020, Meghan and Harry announced they were stepping back from their roles as royals. Elton was Harry’s “rock” during this time, but he was shocked by the couple’s decision. A source told the Mirror at the time that the singing legend knew what was going on long before Queen Elizabeth II did. She said: “Elton speaks to Harry and Meghan every day. He’s an inspiration, almost a ‘mother’ figure. They made their decision on their own, but he’s a shoulder to lean on and has listened to them talk about their plans.

“He’s been a constant support, especially to Meghan, and he’s very protective of both of them. He’s been their rock. So even though he’s never told them what to do, he’s been a listening ear and a support throughout their journey.” However, the MailOnline has learned that he’s still “surprised” by the news. They said: “The first Elton heard about the details and timeline of Harry and Meghan’s plans was when the announcement was posted on their Instagram.”

At the time, Meghan and Harry released a statement saying: “After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to transition this year as we begin to define a progressive new role within this institution. We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work towards becoming financially independent, whilst continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen.

“It is thanks to your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel ready to make this adjustment.” They went on to explain that they plan to “balance” their time between the UK and North America. Elton was a close friend of Harry’s late mother, Princess Diana, whom he met in 1981. At her funeral, he performed Candle in the Wind, rewriting a version of the hit especially for the ceremony. The Rocket Man singer also performed at the Sussexes’ wedding in 2018.
