UConn coach Dan Hurley buys book after turning down million offer from Lakers

He is currently working on a book about a play!

UConn basketball coach Dan Hurley is shopping a book, Page Six has learned exclusively, and sources say he’ll discuss his blockbuster $70 million job offer from the Los Angeles Lakers.

An editor was seen reading Hurley’s proposal on a Metro-North train Tuesday, and multiple sources confirmed that the book is making the rounds.

We’ve heard Hurley is meeting with potential co-writers.

A literary source said of the proposal: “He is considering whether to mount a ‘rapid counterattack towards the Lakers in full swing.'”

Last month, Hurley, the reigning coach of the two-time national champion Huskies, turned down a six-year, $70 million contract as head coach of the storied NBA franchise.

Hurley instead signed a six-year, $32.1 million contract extension after winning his first title in 2023.

Rumors have swirled that the college coach may have deliberately considered NBA bids to get a raise from UConn.

But he denied that rumor, saying in an interview last month: “One of the worst criticisms I’ve heard is that it was a pressure tactic on my part to improve my situation at UConn…. I don’t need pressure here. We’ve won back-to-back national championships here.”

A source joked of the editor reading the proposal on the train: “Maybe literary people should get some spy training before they take the Mad Men train to New York. It seems.”

Another New York publishing insider said of reading interesting properties in public: “You have to be careful when you read a proposal, especially on the subway or the Metro North. Or on any train coming out of Brooklyn or Montclair (New Jersey). Even the Jitney can be risky!”

Hurley said his courtship with the Lakers even took a toll on his personal life.

He said of his wife, Andrea, on “The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz”: “She was crying at first…the first couple of days she got really upset and emotional, not like she was hitting me and stuff…she was emotionally like, ‘I can’t believe you’re doing this to me. Our life is so great…it’s perfect. Our lives couldn’t be better and now you’re doing this to me.'”

Hurley himself was a former basketball player at St. Anthony High School in New Jersey, where his father, Bob Hurley Sr., was the coach, and at Seton Hall. His brother, Bobby Hurley, was a former player at Duke and the Sacramento Kings, and is the head coach at Arizona State.
