“Even an assassin’s bullet couldn’t stop” Trump

The Governor of Arkansas Sarah Huckabee Sanders was welcomed onto the stage of the Republican National Convention with a standing ovation as one of the final speakers of the evening Tuesday.

Sanders, who served as Donald Trump’s press secretary, began her speech by referencing the attempted assassination of the former president at Saturday’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, praising his strength.

“I have never been prouder than to stand with Trump tonight,” she said. “Not even an assassin’s bullet could stop him. Almighty God stepped in because America is one nation united under God, and He is certainly not done with President Trump.”

Recounting a story about taking her children to meet her former boss at the White House, Sanders drew a big laugh from the crowd as she addressed President Joe Biden, saying, “I was fortunate enough to take my 4-year-old son, Huck, to Bring Your Child to Work Day, much like Jill now takes Joe to Bring Your Husband to Work Day.”

Sanders reflected on her experience in the Trump administration, recalling the criticism she faced from the media at the time. During her tenure as press secretary from July 2017 to July 2019, Sanders was accused of lying to White House reporters.

Speaking of her own record as governor, Sanders said she was the “first and only governor in the country to drive Communist China off our farmland,” but at least 24 other states also ban or restrict nonresident ownership of farmland, according to the Agricultural Law Center.

Overall, Sanders’ speech appeared to be one of the most unifying of the evening for the crowd, which applauded repeatedly as she shared anecdotes and sought to paint a more human picture of Trump the man.

“President Trump is a leader, and he is the leader our country needs, and if there was any doubt, earlier this week we saw how tough, how resilient, how courageous and how bold this man is,” she said. “We cannot have him back in the White House.”
