Man sentenced to 12 years in prison for attempted murder caught on camera

According to the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office, “Today in the Circuit Court of Montgomery County, Maryland, the Honorable Durke Thompson sentenced the defendant, Sorie Mansaray, age 20, of unknown address, to 30 years in prison, suspended, with all but 12 years to serve and five years of supervised probation upon release.”

“Mansaray was convicted by a jury on April 18, 2024, of attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault, use of a firearm in the commission of a violent crime, possession of a regulated firearm by a prohibited person and possession of a regulated firearm by a person under 21.

On July 12, 2022, Mansaray shot at a vehicle that had just stopped on the 11000 block of New Hampshire Avenue in Silver Spring, striking and wounding a passenger in the car. The victim was treated at a local hospital for a gunshot wound and survived. The defendant and the victim are believed to have not previously known each other, but met at the Dash In gas station in the minutes before the shooting. As the vehicle the victim was in pulled out of the parking lot, the defendant approached a Metro bus stop and fired as the car passed. The incident was captured on surveillance cameras.

“The shooting occurred in broad daylight along one of the busiest roads in Montgomery County. This type of reckless violence in our community is unacceptable and we will not tolerate it,” said State’s Attorney John McCarthy.

Assistant District Attorneys Peter Larson and Kimberly Cissel prosecuted the case.
