HARRIS, Mich. (WFRV) – Officials with Island Resort & Casino, the premier golf, casino and resort destination in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, announced plans for a $19 million expansion Wednesday.

According to a release, the $19 million expansion will feature a new nine-hole golf course, a new golf shop and a 16,900-square-foot expansion of its convention center.

Officials say the new nine-hole golf course, named Cedar Course (Kishki), will be located on the site of the Sage Run Golf Course and will be designed by Paul Albanese, who also designed courses such as Sweetgrass and Sage Run.

“We are very busy in the summer and often have bookings on our other two courses in the morning. We decided to add nine holes to meet the needs of our guests who are looking for early morning tee times before heading home. We are not adding anything to Sage Run, but we are making these nine holes our own course.

In addition to the new Sage Run Golf Course, Sweetgrass Golf Course will be building a new golf shop. The shop is expected to overlook Sweetgrass’ scenic 9th and 18th holes.

The store is designed to be a 3,000-square-foot space that will include an upper terrace overlooking the golf course as well as a full-service pro shop, covered outdoor patios, a full-service bar and a locker room with guest showers.

Officials said the $19 million will also be used to expand the resort’s 16,900-square-foot convention center. The expansion will include the addition of a new grand ballroom that will increase the space’s capacity by 750 seated guests or up to 1,200 guests for larger events.

The new facility is designed to better accommodate larger events, including business conventions. By providing a larger meeting space, conveniently located between lower Michigan and northern Wisconsin, we will meet the growing demand from regional groups. Many of these groups are looking to host multiple-day events throughout the week. We are in the unique position to also provide ample hotel accommodations for these larger conventions.

Expansion project officials report that the new developments will take about two years to complete.
