PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Due to a major computer outage, there are currently 31,000 delays and more than 3,000 cancellations at airports across the United States.

A ground delay has now been put in effect until further notice.

CNN reported that industry experts said the global technology outages appear to stem from a problem with CrowdStrike, a cybersecurity company that counts Microsoft Windows among its clients.

A CrowdStrike representative said they have identified and deployed a fix.

The ministry and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency said they were working with CrowdStrike, Microsoft, and our federal, state, local, and critical infrastructure partners to fully assess and resolve system outages.

Major hospitals in Massachusetts and Rhode Island could also be affected.

According to FlightAware, Boston’s Logan Airport in New England currently has 267 delays and 82 cancellations.

Airlines are urging passengers to check the status of their flight before arriving at the airport.

At TF Green Airport in Warwick there are 5 cancellations and 39 delays so far.

All computers in Providence’s emergency system are also down.

The Rhode Island DMV will open at noon today. Service center appointments scheduled through 10 a.m. today are canceled due to an ongoing global outage that is impacting online and in-person transactions at the RMV and AAA, vehicle inspections, and online credit card payments.

Governor Dan McKee has since tweeted that Rhode Island’s 9-11 system is fully operational, but some services may temporarily experience longer wait times while they resolve the issue.
