Scottish League Cup: Kelty surprise Hibernian

Legend, Kelty springs surprise in Scottish League Cup third round tie

Hibernian were stunned by League One side Kelty Hearts as Callum Flatman’s header saw the Premiership side edged out of Scottish League Cup Group C.

David Gray’s side were unable to recover from their 58th-minute opener at New Central Park, handing him his first defeat as Hibs manager, although they remain top of their group.

Aberdeen have made it two wins from two under new head coach Jimmy Thelin, scoring four unanswered goals away to East Kilbride.

Four other Premiership teams, Dundee United, Motherwell, Ross County and St Johnstone, claimed victories against Ayr United, Clyde, Raith Rovers and Morton respectively.

Airdrieonians, Alloa Athletic, Annan Athletic, Falkirk, Hamilton Academical, Inverness Caledonian Thistle, Livingston, Partick Thistle and Peterhead all recorded victories.

group A

First-half goals from Nicky Devlin and Jamie McGrath gave Aberdeen control of the game at K Park and Leighton Clarkson’s second-half free-kick and Shayden Morris’ effort secured victory.

Airdrie trailed 3-1 to Dumbarton but recovered to win 4-3. James Hilton scored twice for the Sons after Lewis McGrattan had cancelled out Finlay Gray’s opener. Rhys Armstrong, Terrell Agyemang and Ben Wilson scored in the final quarter to send the Diamonds top of the group, ahead of Aberdeen on goal difference.

Group B

Dundee United had to work hard to overcome Ayr United at Tannadice in the evening kick-off, with a tight contest settled by a magnificent free-kick from Brandon Forbes.

David Babunski had given Jim Goodwin’s team the lead, but Marco Rus equalised in the second half.

Aidan Nesbitt twice, Sean Mackie and Ryan Shanley all scored for Falkirk after Ryan Fyffe’s own goal was cancelled out by Buckie Thistle’s Andrew MacAskill.

Group C

Former Hearts player Flatman headed the ball into the net from a pass from former Hibs midfielder Scott Allan to break the tie at New Central Park. Kelty are two points behind Hibs.

Ben Armour put Peterhead ahead against Elgin City but Jack Murray’s goal and Dajon Golding’s penalty tipped the score in the visitors’ favour. Caleb Goldie restored parity and Jason Brown’s double secured a 4-2 victory for the hosts.

Group D

Tommy Goss headed the opening goal for Annan at Arbroath and the home side saw Scott Stewart sent off for violent conduct before half-time. Josh Dixon and Josh Todd added second-half goals for the visitors.

Inverness also won 3-0, with Adam Brooks, Keith Bray and Luis Longstaff all scoring for Duncan Ferguson’s side in the first half.

Leaders Annan are one point ahead of Dundee and four ahead of Inverness.

Group E

There was only one goal at Livingston with Robbie Muirhead scoring for the Lions after 11 minutes.

After 90 minutes, Forfar Athletic and Cove Rangers were level at 1-1, thanks to Connor Scully’s equaliser after Blair Malcolm had opened the scoring for Forfar. Forfar won 3-1 on penalties and they and Livi have six points, three more than third-placed Spartans and Dunfermline Athletic.

Group F

Benjamin Mbunga Kimpioka scored twice in the first half to give St Johnstone a comfortable 2-0 win over Morton in Perth.

At Glebe Park, Alloa took a 3-0 lead thanks to an early Scott Taggart penalty and second-half goals from Kevin Cawley and Luke Rankin, before Marc Scott’s late consolation goal. Alloa are a point behind leaders Saints.

Group G

Motherwell led through Moses Ebiye’s early goal but Lee Hamilton pulled Clyde level in the second half. Lennon Miller’s penalty and Filip Stuparevic’s late goal gave Well a 3-1 win and eight points at the top of the group.

Partick Thistle are second on six points after a 6-0 away win against Edinburgh City. Scott Robinson, Brian Graham, Harry Milne, Ricco Diack, Wasiri Williams and Kyle Turner all scored in the second half.

Group H

Jordan White opened the scoring for County before the break in Dingwall, but Callum Smith pulled Raith Rovers level shortly after the break. George Harmon sealed the score with three minutes remaining. Raith still lead County on goal difference at the top of the group.

At Stair Park, Hamilton took the lead through Steven Bradley, an advantage that was reinforced by Kyle MacDonald and Euan Henderson in the second half. Hamilton are two points behind the top two.
