Hochul Announces 0 Million to Decarbonize Empire State Plaza

Governor Kathy Hochul announced a $100 million investment to begin decarbonizing the Empire State Plaza in Albany. This funding is part of a multi-phase plan by the Office of General Services (OGS) and the New York Power Authority (NYPA) to reduce carbon emissions and support the state’s climate goals.

The first phase will involve electrifying existing steam chillers, improving energy efficiency and installing a new heat recovery chiller. These efforts aim to reduce the Plaza’s greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent.

“New York is leading the way in reducing emissions,” said Governor Hochul. “This investment will help us build a cleaner, greener New York.” The project will also address maintenance needs and modernize the Plaza’s energy systems, setting a precedent for other facilities across the state.
