Uddhav Thackeray opposes ‘Adani City’ in Mumbai, calls for cancellation of Dharavi redevelopment

Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday said his party would oppose the transformation of Mumbai into an ‘Adani City’. He criticised Gautam Adani’s award of the Dharavi redevelopment contract as potentially problematic and called for its cancellation.

“When GIFT City was planned during the Manmohan Ji government, we welcomed it. Modi Ji shifted GIFT City to Gujarat. Now, giving GIFT City to Gujarat and Adani City to Maharashtra, we will not allow it,” he was quoted as saying by ANI.

Thackeray highlighted Mumbai’s unique identity, pledging to preserve it and prevent it from being overshadowed by the Adani brand.

The Shiv Sena (UBT) chief also stressed on clarity in the Dharavi redevelopment, insisting that existing residents should be given 500 sq ft houses. He criticised the lack of transparency in the tender process, describing it as a potential trap.

“We demand that the redevelopment of Dharavi should not displace anyone. If Adani cannot achieve this, they should backtrack and a fresh tender should be floated,” he said firmly, as reported by ANI.

Thackeray also expressed opposition to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah’s alleged plans to develop Mumbai into an Adani-dominated city, reiterating his commitment to ensuring that the redevelopment of Dharavi benefits its residents.

“We have launched a campaign in Dharavi to ensure that the redevelopment provides legitimate housing to its people… Modi and Shah may aspire to make Mumbai an Adani city, but we will not allow it,” Thackeray concluded, as reported by ANI.
