White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said Thursday that it was telling that Republican congressional leaders had to urge their members to refrain from “being racist” and sexist toward Vice President Kamala Harris.

Asked about a Politico report about a closed-door meeting Tuesday morning in which party leaders pleaded with lawmakers to stop attacking Harris based on her identity, Jean-Pierre said: “When the Speaker of the House (Mike Johnson) … calls a meeting to tell Republican leaders to stop being racist, to stop being misogynistic, to stop being sexist, I think it speaks volumes that they should be told not to do that.”

“But more broadly,” she continued, “I think it’s desperate. I think it’s disgusting and it’s a dog whistle. And we have to remember that she’s the vice president of the United States. She’s the vice president of the United States. She should have that respect.”
