On Wednesday’s The One Show, Clara addressed the audience with an emotional message.

She said: “We also wanted to send huge, huge love to our dear friend Lauren Laverne, who earlier today shared the news that he was diagnosed with cancer.

“Thankfully, she is expected to make a full recovery, which she said shows the importance of getting checked out.”

Continuing, the radio presenter added: “So if you’re thinking about it, don’t put it off,” sharing Lauren’s gratitude for the messages of support she’s received from the public.

Cancer screening in England

Detecting cancer early gives you the best chance of survival, and a big part of that is getting regular screenings.

NHS programmes can help diagnose the condition, or the risk of it, and improve the chances of successful treatment.

There are three national screening programmes in England: cervical cancer screening, breast cancer screening and bowel cancer screening.

“If you are eligible, do your utmost to get tested as this can help to detect a problem early, before you have symptoms,” the NHS says.

“Detecting a problem early can mean treatment is more effective.”

Cervical cancer screening

In England, this procedure is offered to people aged 25 to 64 with a cervix and is routinely performed every three years up to the age of 49, and every five years from 50 to 64.

Depending on the outcome, people may be called back earlier.

During a cervical screening, samples are tested for the high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV), which causes almost all cervical cancers.

Positive tests are then analyzed in more detail.

Breast cancer screening

Breast cancer screenings, which involve an X-ray test called a mammogram that can detect cancers when they are too small to see or feel, are usually offered to women aged 50 to 71 in England.

But the NHS tests them for women under 50 if they are at high risk of developing breast cancer.

Intestinal screening

This test detects whether patients have early signs of cancer.

Men and women aged 60 to 74 receive a home test kit every two years.

This involves providing a small stool sample to check for small amounts of blood, which could be due to cancer.
