Odisha police officer caught taking bribes

Baripadas: Odisha Vigilance officials today arrested a policeman while he was taking bribe to help a youth in a case against him.

Rama Chandra Soren, the assistant inspector of Baripada town police station in Mayurbhanj district, was caught red-handed by the Vigilance personnel while accepting a bribe of ₹6,000 from Sudhansu Sekhar Dutta.

The ASI had demanded Rs 7,000 to remove Dutta’s name from a case. After an agreement, the ASI agreed to pay a bribe of Rs 1,000 less than what it was demanding.

Dutta said his uncle and aunt had filed a complaint with the Baripada police following a family dispute. Soren harassed Dutta and his family and demanded Rs 7,000 to drop the case.

Unable to raise the bribe amount, Dutta knocked on the doors of Odisha Vigilance and demanded justice. Based on Dutta’s complaint, a team of Vigilance officials from Balasore division laid a trap.

While the ASI of Baripada city police station was accepting Rs 6,000 from the complainant outside the police station, the Vigilance team caught the policeman red-handed. Soren was apprehended and the entire bribe money was recovered and seized from him.

The Vigilance conducted simultaneous raids on two locations associated with Soren, suspecting him of accumulating disproportionate assets.

Balasore Vigilance PS Case No.10/2024 U/s 7PC (Amendment) Act, 2018 has been registered against Soren.
