A baby hippo is taking the world by storm, but not everyone is nice to her

Just kidding, there’s plenty of room on the internet for more than one charismatic hippo.

And that’s a good thing, because Moo Deng, a 2-month-old pygmy hippo, is having his moment in the spotlight. The young hippo resides at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Thailand. His name, which means “bouncing pig,” is also the name of a common chewy pork dish, CNN reports.

Here it is.

Moo Deng’s expressive face and petite, chubby body have made her a social media star, with fans calling her a “lifestyle icon” and “the most beautiful girl in the world.”

She has gained international fame in recent days, with Time magazine calling her a “legend” and “star of the moment.”

Zoo staff knew they were holding something special from the moment he was born, but even they couldn’t predict his influence.

“As soon as I saw Moo-Deng born, I set myself the goal of making her famous, but I didn’t expect it to spread overseas,” zookeeper Atthapon Nundee told the Guardian.

I saw some of you writing about Moo Deng earlier this week, saying she had her 15 minutes. Look who’s laughing now. May she be slightly damp forever.

However, fame has not been a walk in the park for Moo Deng. Khao Kheow Zoo has reportedly seen a significant increase in visitors since her birth in July, and not all of her fans are polite. Videos shared online have shown people throwing objects and spraying water at her while she sleeps in an attempt to wake her up.

“These behaviors are not only cruel but also dangerous,” said zoo director Narongwit Chodchoi. The zoo has since installed security cameras and threatened legal action against the harassers, he noted.

While Khao Kheow Zoo has enjoyed positive media coverage around Moo Deng, it has been criticized in recent years for its elephant swimming shows. Critics have accused the zoo of using cruel and painful techniques to force elephants to perform in the water, an allegation the zoo has denied.
