Severe weather kills two, disrupts air traffic in Philippines

Tropical Storm Enteng, known internationally as Yagi, has killed two people in the Philippines and forced the cancellation of flights, the country’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said Monday.

The council is currently verifying the information and says 14 families from three villages have been affected by the heavy rains. Two structures also collapsed during the storm, while heavy rains triggered a landslide in the area.

The storm intensified the southwest monsoon, prompting President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to order advance announcements on work and school suspensions for Tuesday, the Manila-based Inquirer daily reported.

“We will try to give the report card as early as possible for work and school tomorrow. My instruction is that, if possible, before going to bed, we should already know if there will be work or classes tomorrow or not,” Marcos said.

The storm also severely affected maritime operations, leaving 739 passengers stranded in various ports, including 679 in Bicol and 60 in Calabarzon.

A total of 22 ships, four motor vessels and 282 rolling cargo ships were unable to depart due to the dangerous conditions.
