Fans of Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica might want to check out Marvel’s upcoming sci-fi series

Nova has been in the works for a while now, and Marvel’s streaming chief has shed some light on what to expect from the series.

You’ve probably never heard of Nova, even though she’s a relatively popular character in the comics, but you’ll probably recognize her appearance. The Nova Corps actually made an appearance in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie 10 years ago, and while the movie established the group, it hadn’t yet introduced the superhero Nova. Back in July, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige confirmed that a Nova series was in development, though it’s not expected for another three or four years. And now, speaking with Phase Zero’s Brandon Davis, Marvel’s head of streaming, television, and animation Brad Winderbaum has shared a little more about the series.

“Nova is in development right now, but we’re developing more than we’re producing. This is the new Marvel,” he seems to be referring to Marvel’s continued attempt to slow down its production. “We should talk about it. At Marvel, everything is focused on Nova. We love Nova, we want to get it right.” He went on to explain that this project and a few others are in development, but Marvel won’t “start a series until we’re happy with the pilot, happy with the bible.”

Winderbaum also spoke about the kinds of things that inspire the series, continuing: “In terms of covering cosmic stories on Disney+, I’ve been really inspired by what Star Trek has done over the last few years… The Nova series that’s in development right now is an incredible ensemble piece. I shouldn’t give too much away, but it’s like a great example of characters that have shades of (Star) Trek, shades of Battlestar Galactica.”

Obviously, based on what Winderbaum has said, we’re still a few years away from a Nova series, but it seems like it’s at least starting in the right place. For those unfamiliar with Nova, the series will supposedly follow the original incarnation of Richard Rider, a high school student given cosmic powers by a dying member of the Nova Corps, traveling through space to fight bad guys, the usual stuff. Who knows if the series will be similar to this one or not, so for now, you’ll just have to wait and see.
