Ohio State Football Team Announces Three Players for Game Against Akron

The Ohio State football team entered their first week with a 50+ point lead against the Akron Zips. Although the Buckeyes were unable to cover the deficit, they still finished with an impressive 52-6 victory.

With two defensive touchdowns as well, there were a plethora of players to choose from for player of the game honors. The Buckeyes named a special teams player, an offensive player and a defensive player of the game.

THE The special teams player of the game was Brandon Innissa four-star recruit in the 2023 class.

Inniss was the fifth-leading receiver in his class, but he served more often as a punt returner. He had four returns for 60 yards, including a 36-yarder Saturday. That Inniss got the honor isn’t surprising, even though Jayden Fielding made 7 of 7 extra points and 1 of 1 field goal.

As for Defensive Player of the Matchwhich goes to Lathan Ransom. Again, not the most surprising announcement, especially considering Ransom took a scoop-and-score home. Ransom finished with a game-high nine tackles, two of which resulted in a loss.

As for the offensive player of the game award, that was really the only surprise. Kansas State transfer quarterback Will Howard received that honor ahead of freshman Jeremiah Smith.

Howard finished with three touchdowns and 228 yards. Smith was his leading receiver, finishing with two touchdowns of his own and 92 of those yards.

Regardless of who received those awards, the most important takeaway was the Buckeyes’ 46-point win in their season opener Saturday. They’ll face Western Michigan at home in Week 2 and will once again be the heavy favorite to win.
