Máiréad Tyers joins RTÉ and Hulu’s dark comedy ‘obituary’

EXCLUSIVE: Extraordinary star Máiréad Tyers has joined the cast of Obituary as cameras roll on the second season of the dark comedy crime drama. The series, produced by APC Studios (UK) and Irish indie player Magamedia, is headed to Irish public broadcaster RTÉ and Hulu in the US. Bafta-nominated Tyers will star alongside returning lead actress Siobhán Cullen (The dry).

The series airs on Netflix in the UK. It follows Elvira (Cullen), a young woman obsessed with death who writes obituaries for a local newspaper. When she doesn’t have enough bodies to fill the required columns, she resorts to murder.

Season 2 will be filmed in County Donegal, and it sees Elvira grappling with the death of her beloved father. Once again, she seeks relief through killing, but is beaten by a mysterious new killer in town. A local police officer, Inspector Rose (Noni Stapleton), suspects Elvira of the crime, which in this case she did not commit. Elvira is determined to solve the murder herself and meet a potential kindred spirit.

Tyers plays Vivienne, an eccentric editor who pits Elvira against her boyfriend Emerson (Ronan Raftery) in the newsroom.

Rachel Carey (Deadly cuts), and Gary Shore (Dracula unpublished) are on board to direct and Ray Lawlor (The Ceangal) is once again the writer. Laurent Boissel of APC Studios and Paddy Hayes of Magamedia are executive producers.

APC’s commercial arm is handling distribution of the show, which has been sold to Netflix in the UK, AMC Networks International in Spain and Portugal, Britbox in Australia and Turkish streamer BluTV, backed by Warner Bros. Discovery, among others.

Obituary The series airs on RTÉ One and the streaming service RTÉ Player in Ireland. Hulu has exclusive SVOD rights in the United States. The six-episode second season will air on RTÉ and Hulu in mid-2025.

The series is produced in association with Screen Ireland, Coimisiún na Meán and WRAP.
