ESPN analyst says Carolina Panthers should consider benching Bryce Young

Bryce Young’s first year with the Carolina Panthers is something that will never be forgotten. That said, it’s hard to forget something when the same product returns the following season. In Sunday’s blowout loss to the New Orleans Saints to open the season, the Panthers quarterback once again became the talk of the league, and not for good reasons.

Young threw an interception to Will Harris on his first pass attempt of the day and never recovered. He fumbled a few passes over the middle, missed a few deep shots and never looked comfortable in the pocket. He finished the afternoon completing 13 of 30 passes for 161 yards and two interceptions.

It’s only one game, so it might be a little early to panic, but there is good reason to be concerned. ESPN’s Dominique Foxworth suggested on his podcast that the Panthers are considering benching Bryce Young in favor of Andy Dalton if his poor play continues.

“There’s a difference between when you give up completely and when you bench him. I think if things don’t get better, benching him is the best thing for him and for this team and I guess you should go with Andy Dalton. He was a professional starter in this league at one point. He’s a Joe Flacco-level quarterback. I don’t think you’re setting yourself up for success, but at least you’re not benching Bryce Young to get beat up even more and have his confidence completely destroyed.”

Dave Canales doesn’t seem ready to bench Young. The Panthers need to figure out if Young is the answer or not and after giving up everything to get him, they need to let this situation play out in what already feels like a lost season.
