Smith County Shelter Dogs Urgently Need Homes to Make Room for Others

TYLER, Texas (KLTV) – There were 27 adoptable dogs in need of homes at the Smith County Animal Shelter on Friday. Shelter operators say the facility is overcrowded and these dogs are facing a potential life or death situation.

“The last resort we try to avoid is euthanasia for all available animals, because the majority of them are very adoptable,” said Amber Greene, the shelter’s manager. “They just need to know that they are loved.”

The urgent need for more space comes as the shelter has seized and taken custody of 59 dogs from what authorities have called cases of animal cruelty and alleged dog fighting. The rescued dogs are not yet available for adoption.

The shelter waived adoption fees for the month, but Greene said that doesn’t mean they’re taking the owner vetting process any less seriously.

“The screening process is still the same,” she said. “They have to fill out the form. Just because we need the dogs removed from here doesn’t mean we’re going to let them go to just anyone.”

They have dogs of various ages and sizes that need to be adopted. To see all 27 dogs available and read details about them, click here.

“In my opinion, every dog deserves a loving home. They are living, breathing creatures and of course they have feelings,” Greene said.
