JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy Get the Ryan Murphy Treatment

From the OJ Simpson trial to the murder of Gianni Versace to the feud between Truman Capote and his swans, Hollywood producer Ryan Murphy has made a name for himself by taking sensational events and cultural moments from history and giving them his own personal, kitschy spin for the small screen.

Fresh out of the premiere of American Sports History: Aaron Hernandez This week, Murphy is already working on more American History fallout. American Love Story will explore the “true and heartbreaking love stories that have captured the world’s attention.”

And is there really a love story as fiery, beautiful, captivating—and tragically brief—as that of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette? America’s golden couple will be the first subjects of the new scripted anthology series, which will trace the course of their relationship, from their whirlwind courtship to the immense pressures of relentless tabloid scrutiny and the plane crash that ended it all in the summer of 1999.

American Love Story was first announced in 2021, and in September 2024, executive producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson confirmed Variety it was still in progress.

“We really want to tell that story,” Jacobson said. Simpson added: “We have great scripts for it. We’re trying to figure out when it’s going to come out. It’s a story that’s really resonating right now. It’s incredible. A lot of young women look to her as kind of an icon of a certain era, which is really fascinating, and I hope we can bring that to the screen soon.”
