Teachers gather for annual outdoor leadership conference

WINTHROP, Maine (WABI) – Teachers and educators from across the state gathered today in Winthrop to learn effective ways to teach outdoor skills and strategies.

The Teens for Trails Outdoor Leadership Conference hosted sessions to teach teachers about icebreakers, outdoor safety and how to keep up with their classes on wilderness adventures.

The goal of the day was to spread knowledge across the state so schools and programs can get more children outside into nature.

“It shows our young people that there is prosperity here and a career in outdoor work, which can be on boats, in the mountains, and in many different capacities,” said the Wiscasset Middle principal. High School and member of Teens. for the Sarah Hubert Trails Council.

“Teachers are so eager to do better and better and then they feel like they’re not doing enough to run the outdoor club. So what I’m saying is, ‘all you have to do is open the door,'” added Teens for Trails Executive Director Alicia Heyburn.

Teens to Trails hosts events throughout the fall and winter.
