Mumbai’s Western Line will face delays and 150-175 train cancellations from September 30 to October 4 due to speed restrictions related to track works.

Mumbai: Daily commuters on the Western Line are likely to face delays between Monday and Friday (September 30 to October 4) as speed restrictions will be imposed between Goregaon and Kandivali due to track-related works that will have a cascading effect on rail services.

The speed limit is being implemented as part of the ongoing reconstruction of the 5th and 6th railway lines between Ram Mandir and Kandivali stations.

According to details shared by Western Railway officials, the rail disruptions will include cancellation of 150 to 175 suburban train services between September 30 and October 4.

The cancellation of services will involve adjusting the daily train schedule due to a speed restriction of 30 kmph imposed on all four railway lines between Ram Mandir and Malad stations.

This will affect both local and transit services.

The renovation of the rail lines is part of the critical infrastructure project aimed at decongesting Mumbai’s suburban rail network, one of the busiest in the world.

“Train services are expected to return to normal by October 4, except during lockdown periods. However, due to the unavailability of the Goregaon loop, the four morning express services from Goregaon will remain canceled during this period,” said Vineet Abhishek, public relations director, Western Railway.

Over the past month, rail authorities have moved all four rail lines west and changed the alighting and boarding side of the platform.

Such a move will free up two lines for up and down lines dedicated to trains at secondary stations.

Not only will the punctuality of commuter trains improve, but it will also free up existing fast lines to introduce more rail services.
