Gallahan announces nearly million in state aid for Ontario County public libraries

Seven public libraries in Assembly District 131 will receive approximately $938,124 in state aid for critical construction projects, Rep. Jeff Gallahan (R, C-Manchester) announced. The funding, part of $34 million allocated in the state budget for public library construction and broadband infrastructure, will support critical upgrades and improvements at the District’s libraries.

The funding will be distributed as follows:

  • Aurora Free Library: $53,280
  • Danger Library Association: $450,000
  • Mary Wilcox Memorial Library: $82,724
  • Clifton Springs Library: $68,456
  • Geneva Public Library: $116,055
  • Phelps Library: $64,241
  • Wood Library Association: $103,368

“These funds will make a big difference in helping our local libraries make much-needed renovations and improvements,” Gallahan said. “Public libraries are vital to our communities, and I am pleased to see so many people benefiting from these public resources. »

The funds, sourced from the 2023-2024 state budget, will be used for a variety of projects, including roof replacement, HVAC system upgrades, installation of alternative energy resources and electrical upgrades. Libraries can also use the funding to improve broadband infrastructure, install electric vehicle charging stations, and build or replace parking lots.

Many New York State libraries are aging: more than half of the approximately 1,000 public libraries are more than 60 years old. Another third are over 30, according to a recent survey. As a result, many libraries face energy efficiency issues, accessibility issues for patrons with disabilities, and outdated infrastructure that limits internet and technology services. The documented need for library construction and renovation statewide exceeds $1.75 billion.

“These projects are essential to bringing our libraries up to modern standards,” Gallahan added. “It’s exciting to see how these improvements will better serve our communities.” »

Gallahan also highlighted additional funding on the horizon for public libraries. The 2024-25 state budget allocated $44 million, an increase of $10 million from the current fiscal year, for future library construction projects, which will be announced in the summer 2025.

As libraries continue to expand their role in providing public access to technology, community meeting spaces and essential resources, these funds are expected to play a key role in ensuring they remain accessible and functional for years to come .
