CLAY COUNTY, Minnesota — A terrifying ordeal on a Minnesota country road was caught on camera.

Sam Dutcher, 18, was driving in Clay County when he said his white 2022 Honda Pilot took off on its own.

The SUV reached speeds of up to more than 113 miles per hour.

When he was unable to stop the car, he called 911.

The Minnesota State Patrol responded to the call and began talking to him as troopers caught up to him.

“I’m going to die tonight,” Dutcher said, describing his thoughts while driving.

The officers tried to set up stop sticks to pop the tires and hope the vehicle would stop. But it didn’t work.

The soldiers turned to “Plan B.” They activated the patrol car’s “anti-collision sensors” and accelerated to outrun the SUV.

“Run to the back of (that of the soldier) car,” law enforcement told the 18-year-old driver.

The teenager followed instructions and crashed into the soldier. Eventually they all stopped.

“It’s not very often that a sheriff’s deputy orders you to hit a State Patrol vehicle, but hitting Trooper Zach Gruver’s squad helped save the life of 18-year-old Sam Dutcher,” the Minnesota State Patrol said on social media.

In total, this terrible ordeal lasted around 20 minutes.

Later, the heroic soldiers, the 18-year-old and his mother reunited.

Honda released the following statement to ABC News:

“We are grateful that the customer is safe…We cannot speculate on the issue the customer experienced without a detailed inspection of the vehicle. We encourage the family to have the vehicle towed to an authorized Honda dealership to allow this inspection.”
