Western Kentucky’s new football helmet was inspired by its beloved mascot Big Red.

The Hilltoppers unveiled the all-red helmets Thursday, which feature the mascot’s eyes on the sides.

Big Red, which debuted in 1979, is an undefined entity. Western Kentucky’s official website describes him as a “huge, furry, adorable creature” who often shakes and slides his belly when something good happens on the field or basketball court.

This isn’t the first time the Hilltoppers have designed a jersey combination paying homage to the creature.

Western Kentucky has put Big Red on its helmet in each of the last three seasons, including 2024. The previous two iterations featured a full portrait of the mascot, with the 2023 design specified for each position group.

For example, one lineman’s helmet showed Big Red lined up with his hand in the dirt. The running back’s helmet showed him striking the Heisman pose.

The quarterback’s helmet seemed to confirm that Big Red is a left-handed thrower, although he could also be ambidextrous. You can’t put physical limits on a unique being like Big Red.

Western Kentucky will debut the new, all-Big Red look when UTEP takes to Houchens Industries – LT Smith Stadium on October 10.

Hopefully for the Hilltoppers, the Big Red jerseys will get them back on track after a 21-20 loss to Boston College on September 28 when Jerand Brandley got the go-ahead goal with 3:33 left in the fourth quarter.

Western Kentucky begins Conference USA part of its schedule after a 3-2 start in non-conference play.
