Jon Stewart shares more information about his headline-making departure from Apple TV+, clarifying that he was not censored during his two seasons hosting. The problem with Jon Stewart.

The comedian and political commentator appeared on Matthew Belloni’s show The city podcast this week to talk more about what led to the show’s disbandment, noting that there are no hard feelings.

“They didn’t censor me, it wasn’t free speech,” Stewart said. “When you work for a company, that’s part of the contract, even at Comedy Central. The contract is I can do whatever I want until they think it’s going to hurt their beer sales or what that they want to sell, and that’s the deal we all make Nobody gets a platform, and when you’re in someone’s house and they want you to take off your shoes, you. take off your fucking shoes or you’re going to someone else’s house.”

Stewart also acknowledged the “very challenging content environment,” adding, “Imagine starting a content company. You have no intellectual property. You literally have no intellectual property. There is no Marvel Universe. There is no intellectual property. Star Wars. There is nothing. And you can’t buy libraries. Comparing Apple TV+’s strategy to buying antiques, Stewart said, “I was in the antique era where they thought they had a certain value that they were buying, and then they brought it in.” in their magnificent boutique museum that is Apple TV+ and I didn’t realize that somehow it had been cursed by an Egyptian pharaoh when he closed the door.

It was a solid first two seasons, but Stewart remembers things going “south” after welcoming economist Larry Summers. The two were in the middle of a discussion about the federal government’s business interests and profits when Summers pointed out Stewart’s employment at Apple, leading the host to acknowledge the company’s role in the monopolistic market. (Apple is currently embroiled in an antitrust lawsuit with the Justice Department.)

“We are broadcasting the interview for the public. They explode like we just hit a three-pointer at the buzzer,” Stewart recalls. “The show ends, we come down and we’re in full Rudy mode…and then the Apple executives come into the dressing room with a glance. on their faces, and I was like, oh my God, did the factory explode? Like, what happened? And they go, are you going to use that Summer thing?

The ordeal that followed made Stewart realize that their “goals” didn’t match. “That’s when I realized I’m not sure I can win here. We had done an interview on an episode about guns and an episode about gender, and it all made them very nervous.” As Season 3 approached, “I realized that we weren’t going to be able to do the season that we had planned and that everything was going to be a struggle,” Stewart said, later clarifying that he hadn’t no malice against society. “They are completely within their rights.”

Stewart has since returned to his Daily show his roots as a guest host. He previously made headlines when he claimed Apple discouraged him from interviewing Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan in connection with the Justice Department’s antitrust case.
