Manchester United are considering signing Matthijs de Ligt from Bayern Munich, according to The Athletic.

The 24-year-old has become a serious target for the Red Devils as they look to strengthen their defense.

Man United have released Raphael Varane and need to strengthen their rearguard. They have set their sights on De Ligt, who has long been tipped to become one of the world’s best defenders.

The Dutch central defender has plenty of experience, having played for Ajax, Juventus and Bayern.

De Ligt helped Bayern keep two clean sheets in 22 Bundesliga appearances last season but injuries derailed his campaign.

Official negotiations have not yet started, but De Ligt appears to be a concrete option. United’s interest in the defender dates back to his days at Ajax.

De Ligt’s contract with Bayern runs until 2027, but his price tag should be manageable compared to other targets.

United’s previous offer of £35m plus bonuses for Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite was rejected, with the Toffees having expected almost £70m.

United is also exploring other options. Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo is unavailable and Lille’s Leny Yoro appears destined to join Real Madrid.

The pursuit of De Ligt is independent of the Branthwaite situation, with United potentially looking to sign two new centre-backs.

Branthwaite and De Ligt could form a formidable backline that will serve Man United for years to come, but completing both deals won’t be easy.

The success of Manchester United’s defensive rebuild will depend on player departures. Sales are needed to generate funds and facilitate the arrival of new players.
