MARIETTA – There were rain clouds and plenty of mud Sunday afternoon at the Washington County Fairgrounds, but that didn’t stop attendees from enjoying the second day of the Washington County Fair on Sunday.

Colbie Westbrook, 10, was at the fair Sunday afternoon and entered a costume contest with her horse Lazy Luna. The contest consisted of children and their horses dressing up in costumes and then displaying them for judging.

Westbrook and Luna won wearing hula-inspired outfits, including a plastic pineapple on Luna’s saddle and a flower necklace wrapped around her tail. Westbrook wore a swimsuit, flower necklaces and an inflatable tropical bird.

Westbrook said she felt “very good” about winning the contest.

She loves “All” about horses, she said, including “their personalities”.

Luna is “gentle (and) friendly”Westbrook said.

Tiffany Uselton, her brother Mark Stevens, her sister Sabrina Stevens and all of their children were among the crowd watching Westbrook during the competition.

Uselton said she brought her children because “it was something to do” and because of the horses.

“A lot of kids like horses and I like horses.” she said. “I’ve always loved horses… I like to pet them, I think they’re great.”

Uselton’s son, Brayden Uselton, 14, enjoys “All” at the fair, he said.

He especially likes rides and horses, he said.

There were several activities for children and families to enjoy at the fair on Sunday, including a dog show, an entertainment show called Mr. Puppet and sensory play stations called Happy Messy Play.

Chelsea Eddy brought her two sons, Holden Eddy, 3, and Camdyn Eddy, 18 months, to the fair on Saturday. They played in an area with dried corn and miniature figurines like cows.

Eddy said her husband’s family always came to the fair and she and her husband had been coming since they started dating.

“So we come every year… The boys love to see the animals and they play,” she said.

The amusement park opened at noon on Sunday and offered visitors rides and games to enjoy.

Jane Thomson-Timco and Tyler Timco brought their daughter, Murphy Timko, 2, to the fair with Sunday. She had a big smile on her face as she rode a ride in front of her parents.

Thomson-Timco said she brought her daughter to the fair for the rides, the animals and to show her things.

“She loves animals” Thomason-Timco said of his daughter. “She really likes pigs.”

Jess Harmon also brought her children, Ian Harmon, 9, and Kendyl Harmon, 6, to the fair on Sunday. They were playing a game where contestants tried to throw small balls at dishes that floated in a small pool. The prize was a live rabbit.

Kendly Harmon said her favorite part of the fair is “the games” and his brother Ian Harmon agreed, saying he loved the games too.

He said he loves “Darts because I always win.”

The animals at the fair not only perform or participate in exhibitions or demonstrations, their hygiene is also taken care of.

Addi McNabb, 12, spent time Sunday afternoon in one of the fairgrounds’ barns bathing her sheep, Bob.

She said her family has been raising sheep since they were babies and she loves sheep.
