Kate Middleton shares rare message about her royal work during cancer treatment

The Princess of Wales has warmly welcomed the new leader of an organisation ‘which is making a huge difference’

Kate Middleton has posted a surprise message on social media for a cause close to her heart as she continues her cancer treatment.

On September 6, the Princess of Wales, 42, took to X and Instagram Stories for the official accounts she shares with her husband, Prince William, to congratulate adventurer and TV presenter Dwayne Fields on his appointment as the new Chief Scout of Scouts UK. In 2020, Princess Kate became co-president of the organization, working alongside Queen Elizabeth’s cousin, Prince Edward, Duke of Kent.

“I am delighted to welcome @DwayneFields as the UK’s new Chief Scout,” the Princess of Wales wrote. “Scouts is an incredible organisation, teaching #LifeSkills and making a huge difference to young people across the country.”

“I look forward to working with you!” the princess wrote, signing the message with the “C.” Prince William and Princess Kate are known for signing their social media posts with the initials of their first names to signal that the messages come directly from them — and the “C” stands for her full name, Catherine!

On X, the Princess of Wales reposted the Scouts video where Fields introduced himself in his new role and spoke about the impact the scouting group has had on him since he became involved at the age of 7.

“Born in Jamaica, Dwayne came to the UK at the age of six. Growing up in North East London, Stoke Newington, with little access to nature, Scouts provided Dwayne with access to the outdoors, new friendships and opened up new horizons,” a statement said.

The Scouts’ announcement said the group gave Fields “skills, confidence and a place to belong” when he became a Cub Scout.

“Through determination and the support of his volunteer scout leaders and friends, he set out on a path that saw him become the first black Briton to reach the North Pole. He is passionate about encouraging people from all backgrounds to explore nature, support their communities and be the best they can be,” the statement said.

Princess Kate was a Brownie alongside her sister Pippa as a little girl, and revealed during a visit to the Scouts’ headquarters in London in 2019 that she would like her children, Prince George, 11, and Princess Charlotte, 9, to get involved too. (At the time, Prince Louis, 6, was just a baby!)

“She said she would like them to join the scouting community because she likes what it represents, it’s a very open and inclusive way to approach life,” said Lauren Noble, who helped introduce the princess to the club. “She said it would be a great thing for them to get involved in.”

Princess Kate had the opportunity to do just that at The Big Help Out volunteer day following King Charles’ coronation in May 2023, when she and Prince William brought their three children as volunteers to the 3rd Upton Scout Group in Slough to help with various projects.

Kate’s social media post congratulating Fields on her new role marked a rare update as she has been staying out of the spotlight while continuing her cancer treatment. The Princess of Wales shared the news of her health in March and has been scaling back her duties since then. There are no expectations for her return to work, and Prince William kicked off his fall schedule with an art gallery visit tied to his Homewards campaign on September 5.
