Vice presidential debate time

The debate lasts 90 minutes and begins at 9 p.m.

The debate takes place at the CBS Broadcast Center, located on 57th Street, between 10th and 11th Avenues, on the West Side of Manhattan.

The city hasn’t announced specific road closures for its special guests, but New Yorkers should expect increased security and tons of neighborhood buzz.

The candidates have not indicated whether they will stop local campaigning after the game.

What issues and topics are likely to be debated?

Right to abortion, reproductive health care

  • Democrats believe the right to abortion and reproductive health care will motivate their core voters and influence swing voters. Walz has already tried to capitalize by mixing his story with the argument. The governor often talks about how he and his wife, Gwen, needed fertility treatments to have their daughter.

Economy

  • If there’s one broad issue Vance wants to put Walz on the defensive and attach the Democratic ticket to President Joe Biden, it’s the economy. He regularly attacks the Biden-Harris administration over inflation.

Central American roots

  • Expect both running mates, even as they try to keep the focus on their bosses, to highlight their own stories. Vance, author of the memoir “Hillbilly Elegy,” grew up poor in a small Ohio town. Walz grew up in Nebraska and was a high school teacher in Minnesota before running for office.

What are the rules of debate?

The Associated Press reported that CBS said it would be up to Vance and Walz, not the moderators, to check on each other in real time, and that there would be no audience at the event.

Walz and Vance’s microphones will remain on while the other speaks, unlike the two presidential debates. CBS has the choice to turn off a hot mic when needed. Walz and Vance will have two minutes for a closing statement. Vance won a virtual coin toss and will speak last, the AP noted.

During the June debate between Trump and Biden, CNN’s Jake Tapper and Dana Bash limited follow-up questions and did not fact-check either participant.

A few months later, during the September debate between Trump and Harris, ABC’s David Muir and Linsey Davis weighed in with factual corrections to some of Trump’s most egregious inaccuracies.

Will there be another presidential or vice presidential debate?

No additional presidential or vice presidential debates are planned, but the AP reports that could always change.

Presidential candidates typically debate each other more than once per election cycle, but this year is different in several ways. The debates are organized by the host networks, rather than through the bipartisan Commission on Presidential Debates, through which the rules for the debates were previously negotiated.

After the presidential debate between Harris and Trump on September 10, the vice president said she was ready to debate the former president again. The AP reported that Harris said she would “gladly” accept an invitation from CNN on Oct. 23 and hoped Trump would do the same.

The poll shows that negative feelings toward Vance are considerably more widespread than positive views. About half of registered voters have a somewhat or very unfavorable opinion of Vance, up from about 4 in 10 at the end of July, while about a quarter have a somewhat or very favorable opinion of him, and a similar share don’t know enough to say.

Walz, on the other hand, is more appreciated. About 3 in 10 voters have a negative opinion of Walz, while about 4 in 10 have a positive opinion and about 3 in 10 don’t know enough to speak out.
