The meal deal is a hallmark of British lunchtime culture – and there are hundreds of possible combinations you can choose from in supermarkets like Sainsbury’s, Morrisons and Waitrose.

It may have been Boots (notably no a supermarket) that pioneered the dining business in the 1980s, forever changing the lunch breaks of countless Brits, but now, Tesco has made a big change to its meals by collaborating with a popular restaurant chain.

Any guesses? It’s the Asian-inspired brand Itsu, known for its sushi, noodle bowls, dumplings and more across its 76 restaurants in England.

Here’s what you need to know.

What is the change to the Tesco meal deal?

From October 21st, meal deal fanatics will be able to select the Itsu dragon roll sushi range as part of Tesco’s £5 meal offer – a boujier upgrade on the £4 meal deal, which costs £3.60 for Clubcard holders.

Each sushi package will be accompanied by a sachet of mayonnaise, sweet soy sauce and a mini pan complete with crispy tempura pieces.

However, Tesco is not the first supermarket to collaborate with Itsu, as Sainsbury’s has long stocked a range of Itsu products as part of its wider range, including chicken and chive gyoza, chicken big bao and the chicken ramen.

Elsewhere, Itsu has expanded its supermarket range to include five new products, which are immediately available in Waitrose, Morrisons and Asda, and will be stocked in Tesco from 4 November.

The new options include two extra varieties of frozen dumplings – chicken soup and steamed vegetable – which will cost £3 for six 28g pieces. They can be microwaved in their packaging or steamed in a frying pan for greater tenderness.

Elsewhere, three vegetarian snacks also made their debut, including vegetable tempura fries, miso glazed eggplant and crispy pumpkin fritters, all costing £3.25 each.

Meanwhile, McDonald’s has launched a new £5 meal deal to spice up the supermarket mix.

Launched last week, the offer includes the choice of a Cheeseburger or Mayo Chicken, which comes with Medium Fries, a medium soft drink and a side of four Chicken McNuggets. What does that look like in terms of value?

The deal saves almost £2.50 compared to the cost of buying each item individually, and customers can also pick up the four nuggets that aren’t normally available to buy separately in this quantity.

But if you want to claim this absolute steal, you’ll need to head to the store to claim it as it’s not available for delivery.
