Police have confirmed that a 56-year-old man has been arrested in connection and investigations are ongoing.

Closures are expected to remain in place on Whitehill Road and Purdie Street until after midday on Tuesday, and the public is asked to avoid the area.

Superintendent Richard Taylor, of Motherwell police station, said: “We believe this was an isolated incident and there is no danger to the public.

“We have an increased police presence in the area as we understand this could be a very disruptive and worrying time for the local community.
