The people who kidnapped and later murdered Wells Fargo human resources manager Willis Ayieko tried to hide their identities.

Detectives say preliminary findings show that although Ayieko’s four-wheel drive car had a working camera, it was turned off or disabled on the evening of Friday, October 18.

This, according to police, shows that whoever took it knew the camera and made efforts to deactivate it or hide their identities.

Two men who abandoned the car in Sabatia, a few kilometers from the place where the body was found, wore caps and never raised their heads when leaving the scene.

They parked the car near a petrol station and opened the bonnet to suggest there was a mechanical problem before getting out carrying a bag.

The bag is believed to have contained Ayieko’s personal belongings and other valuables.

His friends who were last with him said he insisted on leaving a funeral vigil he was holding in Gem.

His friends suggested they leave in convoy, but he changed his mind and decided to leave before them on Friday, October 18th.

That was the last time he was seen.

A team of detectives left DCI headquarters to join those on the ground in the investigation.

The team said they believe Ayieko was followed from Nairobi to Gem in Siaya, where he was kidnapped and later murdered.

His cell phone was on and off until Sunday, October 20, in the afternoon, according to police. It’s not clear who had it.

The team is also investigating whether Ayieko’s bank accounts were affected during the period he was missing or before his death.

According to police, they will try to talk to their colleagues as part of the murder investigation.

The motive behind the brutal murder is not yet known, but authorities say it indicates revenge.

He was a licensed gun carrier. His pistol with 14 bullets was among the valuables stolen from him.

The body was discovered in Mungowere Creek in Yala, Siaya County, on October 23 at 2pm.

His family reported him missing on Monday, October 21st. Police said the body was decomposed when a student discovered it.

He had bruises on his face and stomach, indicating he had been dragged over a rough surface.

The body was half-naked and appeared to have been tortured elsewhere before being dumped there.

Ayieko went missing last Friday, October 18, after attending a funeral vigil in Gem, Siaya County.

He stayed until around 10pm before leaving the funeral never to be seen again.

His friends said Ayieko was supposed to attend another event in Kakamega on Saturday, October 19, but he never arrived.

The body is in Siaya morgue, awaiting autopsy and other investigations. The investigation team plans to revisit the places he was before he died.

His family and friends are gathering at his Kahawa Sukari residence to plan his funeral as the investigation continues.
