Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has argued that securing Virgil van Dijk’s future is a bigger priority than whether Mohamed Salah will stay or leave this summer.

Both players are out of contract at Anfield in 2025 and are yet to commit to new deals with the club, raising the possibility that the duo could leave for free at the end of next season unless new conditions cannot be agreed.

There has been a lot of talk about Salah’s situation of late, following his row with Jurgen Klopp, with supporters divided over whether to extend the Egyptian’s stay or cash in if a suitable offer arrives.

Much less has been said about Van Dijk’s long-term prospects, which Murphy says is wrong and should be addressed urgently.

“I actually think the most important signing to keep is van Dijk, he told talkSPORT when asked about keeping Salah. “I know it seems a bit silly because of the goals Salah, but Liverpool have no trouble creating chances.

“They’ve obviously struggled over the last few months to six weeks to convert them, of course we know that, but they’re not struggling to create chances. I think Van Dijk’s departure would be a harder blow than Salah, in my opinion.

Van Dijk recently provided an update on his contract situation, telling reporters: “I’m at the club and as captain so I want to help, I will help and I should help (the transition). If it’s him who’s coming, so let’s go see.

“I think I have nothing to discuss because there is no news, I think the club is very busy with who the new manager is going to be and that is the main objective.

“As I said, I’m very happy here, I love the club and that shows too. It’s already a big part of my life, and that’s all I can say. The focus is now put on the last two and then on the The club will focus on the identity of the new manager and there will be a big transition and I am part of it.
