Traffic stop leads to meth trafficking arrest

ANADARKO — Police say 23 grams of methamphetamine found on a Fort Cobb man during a traffic stop led to him being jailed on $250,000 bail and charged with drug trafficking.

Donald Leroy Wright, 43, made his first appearance Wednesday in Caddo County District Court where he was charged with trafficking methamphetamine, records show. He faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

Anadarko Police Bureau Logan Davis said he saw Wright’s vehicle at a gas station and thought he didn’t have insurance. After verifying that this was not the case, he saw Wright enter and begin driving off, followed by a traffic stop.

Wright was in the passenger seat and admitted he did not have insurance, Davis said. He also denied having any drugs inside the vehicle, except marijuana, and said he had a medical marijuana card, the probable cause affidavit states. The officer took the driver and Wright out.

The men told the officer different stories about where they were from, and Wright began acting nervous and speaking in a shaky voice, although he let Davis search his pockets, according to the affidavit. Wright said he last used methamphetamine two days prior and, when told there was suspicion he had drugs on him, he began looking at his pants while offering to take off his shoes to show it off, Davis said.

When Davis asked why he was getting two different stories from the men, Wright responded that he had taken meth earlier, but had thrown it in the trash at another gas station before changing his story of throwing her out the window, the affidavit states. He changed his story again and said he never had drugs on him, according to the officer.

Davis asked Wright if he would be willing to take an police unit, he pulled out two baggies containing 23 grams of methamphetamine, according to the affidavit.

Wright pleaded guilty in March 2016 to one count of possession of a controlled substance and received a 10-year suspended prison sentence. A dismissal conference for that case is scheduled for May 16 at 11 a.m., records show.
