Toledo Zoo Announces Baby Kirkja, Formerly Known as Baby Kirk

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – The latest addition to the Toledo Zoo’s elephant herd, baby Kirk, has been discovered to be a girl and has been renamed Kirkja, according to an article released by the Toledo Zoo.

Toledo Zoo staff said that while closely monitoring the baby elephant, they discovered it was a girl — a mistake they say is fairly common among the elephant community.

Since the discovery, the zoo says baby Kirkja is healthy and growing quickly, weighing five kilos per day! Baby Kirkja currently weighs 439 pounds, an increase of 240 pounds since birth.

The zoo also announced that Kirkja is expected to stay at the zoo for a very long time, as female elephants can stay in their units longer than males who would need to find a new herd.

“We are excited to continue sharing Kirkja’s journey with our community for many years to come,” says the Toledo Zoo.
