Report: Alonso rejected $158 million extension last June

Report: Alonso rejected 8 million extension last June

The New York Mets have offered first baseman Pete Alonso a seven-year contract extension worth $158 million in June 2023, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

However, the two sides were never able to reach an agreement, according to Sherman.

Former Mets general manager Billy Eppler reportedly made the offer to Alonso’s former agency, Apex Baseball.

The proposed deal was inspired by the eight-year, $168 million extension Matt Olson signed with the Atlanta Braves in March 2022, Sherman notes.

Alonso, who is now represented by Scott Boras, will be able to test free agency after this season.

The three-time All-Star has 10 home runs with 23 RBIs and a .765 OPS through 44 games heading into Saturday’s action. The 29-year-old reached the 40-homer plateau three times in five years before 2024, including a career-high 53 in 2019 when he won NL Rookie of the Year.
