The team at Donegal Town charity shop Animals in Need made a shock discovery while investigating why their donation unit was opened.

It emerged that rather than someone trying to break in, the damage was caused by a cat which managed to escape after being left in a box in the unit.

The charity is offering the person the opportunity to provide information anonymously in the chat, but warns that if this does not happen, CCTV footage will be passed to gardaí.

A spokesperson took to social media Monday morning to explain what happened, saying: “To our surprise, our donation unit was breached early this morning.

“Our security cameras showed the culprit was a desperate cat who had gotten out of the unit.

“Can the person who left a cat in a box in the closed donation drop-off unit contact us – without judgment – but we need to know the details about this cat. Is it healthy or has- Was there a need for veterinary care? Was there more than one cat seen on the surveillance video?

“If the person does not contact us today – anonymously – we will pass the entire CCTV footage to the gardai for animal abandonment.”

Followers of the Animals in Need Facebook page expressed varying levels of frustration and anger over the incident.

One person said: “At least he wasn’t thrown into a river like some pathetic people do.” »

Another did not hesitate to condemn the culprit, saying: “I hope whoever did this rots in hell.”
