Nick Owen in tears following son’s message after cancer diagnosis

BBC star Nick Owen lost his temper on live air this week as he discussed his cancer diagnosis.

The respected broadcaster was diagnosed with prostate cancer last April, weeks after his former TV-am co-presenter Anne Diamond revealed she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. She has since undergone a mastectomy.

Nick was awarded an MBE earlier this year. To honor the 76-year-old, his BBC Midlands Today colleague Ben Godfrey read out some messages which brought Nick to tears.

“He is now part of our family. He always found time to support us in our work. His MBE is well deserved,” said the charity Edward’s Trust.

“I got tested myself after his illness and was diagnosed with prostate cancer late last year. So far it looks like early detection has paid off,” another post reads.

When it came to Nick’s son Tim saying he was “very proud of you Dad”, Nick started sobbing.

He responded with emotion: “My Tim… oh, bless you. And I want to thank everyone who’s been in touch, you know, and been supportive.

“And I’m so grateful that people responded to the prostate cancer post first, because it’s such an important thing,” Nick continued.

“People talk about it a lot more now. Not just because of me, but several people have been in the same situation.

“It can be hereditary”

Despite battling “extensive” and “aggressive” prostate cancer since last year, Nick has been successfully treated.

In an interview last December, he said learning he had cancer was “probably the worst day of my life.” “However, after about six weeks I had surgery – obviously a major operation is a major operation – but slowly but surely you get better.

“About three weeks ago I was told there was no sign of cancer. Emotionally, I feel fantastic. However, physically, I am recovering and I still sometimes feel completely exhausted.

During an appearance on the Deadly Silent podcast, Nick also admitted that telling his four children was “difficult” and “emotional.”

“Also, when it comes to the boys (Andy, Tim and Chris), it’s a warning because it can be hereditary,” he explained.

“I really want my boys to be extremely attentive to the case. I’m going to work on them to get there before 50, to be honest, to pass the PSA tests. And the message should be: If you have any concerns, have someone look into it.
