Stop arm cameras installed on BPS buses

Starting this summer, if you pass a school bus, you could receive a letter in the mail with a warning and photos of you doing so, as well as a link to video captured by eight cameras now installed on Buffalo Public Schools buses.

Bus Patrol is a company that works with BPS and the City of Buffalo to install artificial intelligence-powered stop cameras to identify drivers who are breaking the law.

It is a free service for schools and funded by violations. AI records the incident and city officials review it before issuing warnings and citations.

BusPatrol President Justin Meyers said millions of violations occur every year.

“It’s unfortunate, but for a child, going to school should be the easiest and safest thing about their day. But surprisingly, statistically, getting on and off buses is one of the most dangerous things ” Meyers said.

The grace period for issuing warnings only begins July 1. Later this year, these warnings will turn into fines.
