Affordable options for seniors to learn and socialize

PEORIA (25News Now) – Many retired people may struggle to find places to socialize and continue learning, but Bradley University and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) help them do both.

The university and OLLI have been providing educational courses, study groups and trips to adult learners for 30 years. The classes are aimed at people aged 50 and over, but anyone can take part.

Bradley’s director of continuing education, Catherine Lawless, said the institute’s goal was to provide spaces to educate and socialize.

“Studies and research have shown that lifelong learning is important,” Lawless said. “I think many people are becoming more and more accustomed to the idea that learning never stops and the importance of staying actively engaged, socially and intellectually.”

There are no tests or grades, and classes typically last up to two hours, lasting four to six weeks. Learners go on field trips and travel around the world. Next year a group will go to Croatia.

Lawless said the classes and trips are led or taught by volunteers who choose the topic based on member feedback.

“We have classes on everything from chemistry and STEM to gardening and butterflies,” Lawless said. “‘I’d like to see a course on this topic, or I’d like to delve into a book study on this topic,’ and, so, that’s really only limited by their imagination.”

OLLI member Roberta Herbst said she and her husband have been taking classes for 20 years.

“(The) study groups and classes are fantastic, (and) the trips they take,” Herbst said. “We just wanted something that would challenge our lives, something interesting.”

Herbst said it’s a great way to keep your brain healthy while connecting with the community.

“I think it’s vitally important to maintain intellectual stimulation and just be with people. Once you’re retired and living in isolation, it’s not good,” Herbst said.

Currently, Bradley University OLLI has approximately 1,100 members and has been growing steadily since the pandemic.

People can become a member for $5 each spring, summer, fall and winter term. Classes can be free or as little as $10.
