Delhi resident shocked by Rs 30,000 electricity bill: ‘I bought new ACs’

Delhi’s scorching summer is not only impacting the health of residents, it is also burning a hole in their wallets. A Delhi man recently took to Reddit to express his outrage, posting a screenshot of his Rs 30,000 electricity bill for the month of June. The exorbitant cost left him and many other users of the platform stunned.

The Reddit user wrote: “Pain. How is this possible.” He also shared a screenshot of BSES Rajdhani, which indicates that the amount of Rs 30,280 must be paid by July 9.

Delhi experienced one of the hottest summers in its history, with residents facing scorching temperatures and even reports of boiling tap water. To combat the heat, many have largely resorted to air conditioning, but some, like a Delhiite who recently shared his story on Reddit, saw their efforts thwarted by the intensity of the heatwave.

Despite replacing her 16-year-old air conditioners with new ones, high energy bills remained a problem, likely because her household used at least two air conditioners simultaneously.

“I bought new air conditioners thinking it would save money. It actually didn’t save money. Four air conditioners, with at least two running at a time ” he wrote on Reddit.

In the comments section, he pointed out that his new air conditioners had a five-star rating, which theoretically should have helped him save on electricity.

This is not the first time that electricity bills have been hiked in the National Capital Region. Earlier this month, Jasveer Singh, co-founder of Join Hood app, created a buzz on social media when he said he received a bill of Rs 45,000 for a single month.

Meanwhile, hundreds of people have reported frequent power cuts in the city as authorities struggle to meet demand.
