Even DC fans might disown him after Michael Shannon was caught parading with an $1,850 Chips Balenciaga bag

If the DC comics universe has made great progress under the watchful eye of James Gunn, the same cannot be said of the former inhabitants of the DCEU branch which operated under the leadership of Zack Snyder. In addition to bearing the honorary title of being one of the most debated and controversial trilogies to date, the actors of the franchise have also taken a liking to being the object of media mockery in recent times.

Among the protagonists, Henry Cavill suffers a cursed fate with every major project he touches, whether it’s Superman, The WitcherOr ArgyleBen Affleck seethes under rumors of marriage problems, Gal Gadot battles controversies on the political front, Ezra Miller disappears from the map and Dwayne Johnson is called upon to behave stoically.

Perhaps the least damaging of these is the controversy surrounding DC star Michael Shannon and his obnoxiously overpriced and uninspired fashion statement.

Michael Shannon’s Fashion Statement Causes Uproar

With the fashion world becoming more ridiculously competitive by the day, it was only right that the absurdities would also start to colour the red carpet promos and Hollywood events on this side of the entertainment industry as well. However, while much more low-key than an actual runway, Hollywood has proven to be a fertile ground for designers and fashion houses to tap into their talents.

In recent years, fans have been treated to some of Zendaya’s iconic looks, whether it’s on the steps of the Met or at a movie premiere. On the other hand, sights like Rihanna’s iconic omelette dress have been fodder for critics, fans, and late-night talk show hosts. However, one recent fashion statement, far below Zendaya and Rihanna’s, still managed to catch the attention of fans for its absurdity.

Michael Shannon, who played DC’s fearsome and vicious supervillain General Zod in Steel man (2013) and The flash (2023), was seen carrying a bag of chips onto the red carpet as part of her outfit accessory rather than as a mid-event snack. The bright yellow bag resembling the Lay’s Cheese and Onion Maxi Pack was not a tasteless imitation of the original product but an exclusive creation of fashion royalty, Balenciaga.

While fans aren’t ones to keep their cool when it comes to Hollywood entertainers and their typically ridiculous shenanigans, the Michael Shannon incident truly brought out some of the nastiest trolls in social media history.

While some outright mocked the lack of design innovation, “When humans run out of ideas, we get this” Others have criticized the tasteless display of wealth and prestige that accompanies it – “More rich bullshit…$1,900 for a fake purse of chips.”

A social media user, entertainmentwent even further by delivering a masterstroke to both the brand and the actor for displaying the design, claiming: “I thought Idiocracy was just a movie.”

Crafted from leather and designed by Balenciaga creative director Demna Gvasalia, the luxe clutch comes in four shades, each resembling a popular Lay’s fragrance: Cheese and Onion (yellow), Salt and Vinegar (blue), Lime (green), and Spicy Chili (red). Launched as part of the Spring/Summer 2023 collection, the $1,800 fashion accessory is considered a status symbol for fashion’s elite rather than a topic of social media jokes.
