Courteney Cox Posted a Chaotic Scream-Inspired Pride Month Tribute, and Fans Are Here for It: 'Gale Is for Girls and Gays'

Since the beginnings of horror, the genre has always been a place that the LGBTQ+ community has looked to, particularly in terms of stories tackling topics of otherness that queer people can often relate to. This extends to Shout films, which Courteney Cox is now happily celebrating as Pride Month continues!

The actress has played Gale Weathers in all of Shout movie so far, and it’s reportedly in talks to return for Scream 7With June being Pride Month, Cox took to Instagram to share this chaotic, but very animated and rainbow-filled video. Shout to modify:

Where did she find this? The Disjointed Pride graphic shows Gale Weathers wearing enough different colors of matching costumes to make up the rainbow. And what’s even better is that Ghostface is also in the background with a rainbow mask. Cox wrote: “Gale had a great proud month. Fans were absolutely thrilled with Cox’s message focused on the LGBTQ+ community. While Neve Campbell, who is ready to play in Scream 7 also, is considered one of the the best scream queens In horror history, Cox’s role of Gale Weathers is undoubtedly iconic in its own right!

The LGBTQ+ Subtext Behind Scream

The recent Shout the films had queer representation with the character of Jasmin Savoy-Brown, but even the 1996 original has LGBTQ+ subtext. Its screenwriter, Kevin Williamson, is gay. Although he shared that he was “very hesitant to present his gay side” when the film was released, he believes he wrote the original Ghostface story as “a little bit coded and maybe accidental.” As he said Source of pride in 2022:

It’s very homoerotic, in the sense that there were these two guys who killed this other person just to see if they could get away with it. And one of the reasons one of them could get the other one to follow is because I think the other one was secretly in love with him. And it was kind of a fascinating case study in double murders. If you Google “Leopold and Loeb,” you’ll see. And you’ll read what’s going on and you’ll realize, OK, it’s Billy and Stu.

The ’90s were a different time when it came to gay representation, but as Williamson shared, he definitely considers Matthew Lillard’s Stu Macher and Skeet Ulrich’s Billy Loomis to be pretty “homoerotic.” As he continued:

It’s up to you to wonder, because Billy was clearly the one in charge. Billy was the one who had the mother. Billy was the one who orchestrated all of this. And Stu was the person who helped set this all in motion. So that put Stu in this position, as to what his feelings were toward his best friend. That, we don’t know. It just leaves you guessing.

Williamson’s words came more than 20 years after the Shout The franchise has attracted attention from the LGBTQ+ community. Kevin Williamson should direct Scream 7 himself! We can’t wait for the sequel to join upcoming horror movies once he has progressed in his development. In the meantime, Happy Pride by Courteney Cox, Gale Weathers… and Ghostface?!
