Staten Island’s Matt Festa gets a call at Citi Field

The New York Mets bullpen has been a revolving door for relief pitchers this season — and a Staten Islander could be the next through it. Great Kills native Matt Festa got the call from The Show on Sunday morning, according to multiple media outlets.

The Mets promoted Festa and left-hander Tyler Jay from Triple-A Syracuse, while Tylor Megill and Danny Young were optioned to make room on the 26-man roster. The team also designated outfielder Duke Ellis for assignment and moved left-hander Brooks Raley to the 60-day injured list.

Festa, 31, spent nine professional seasons on the West Coast – including parts of four MLB campaigns with the Seattle Mariners – before signing with the Mets organization earlier this month.

The right-hander joined the San Diego Padres in January but failed to crack the major league roster by the end of training camp. He went 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA in 16 appearances for Triple-A El Paso before being released.

The 6-foot-1, 195-pound pitcher was quickly picked up by the Mets and has performed much better at Triple-A Syracuse in recent weeks. The St. Joseph-by-the-Sea senior, who grew up a Yankees fan, recorded a 1.76 ERA in 15 1/3 innings.

Festa could debut his team and his season on Sunday afternoon. The Mets, who have a 40-40 record, will host the Houston Astros for a 1:40 p.m. game at Citi Field.

Festa of course spent the first eight seasons of his career with the Seattle Mariners organization, where he made 89 MLB appearances between 2018 and 2023. He posted a 2-2 record and recorded 2 saves, totaling a 4.32 ERA in 93.2 innings, in which he struck out 102 batters.

Festa was selected by the Mariners in the seventh round of the 2016 MLB draft out of East Stroudsburg. He was designated for assignment by the club in August before joining the Friars.
