Shock: Church robbed of valuable silverware in burglary

An East Suffolk community has been left shocked after all of a church’s silverware was stolen in a burglary.

The caretaker of St Michael’s Church in Framlingham discovered serious damage to the building and its vault on Thursday.

Police have launched an investigation into the burglary and are appealing for witnesses.

The break-in happened when intruders entered the church, located on Church Street near the city centre, in the early hours of the morning.

The church vault was damaged and broken into, and the silverware inside, including the chalices, was stolen.

A set of old doors were also damaged during the burglary.

Rector Chris Davey said he was grateful for the outpouring of support following the incident – with some messages coming from as far away as the United States.

He said: “The silverware is marked with smart water, so if it is found it can be returned to us safely.

“Although we closed on Thursday, we have now dusted ourselves off to continue church activities. Fortunately, no one was injured or traumatized during the break-in.

“I am grateful for the fantastic support the church has received from the local community. I have even received emails from all over the world, from countries like America and Germany.”

Suffolk Police have launched an investigation into the break-in and are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with information relating to the incident to come forward.

A police spokesperson said: “The criminals forced their way into the building, causing damage, while a disorderly search was carried out before a quantity of silverware was stolen. »
